Norfolk Cart
Description
This is a simple but fairly sporting vehicle built in the early 20th century. It was used by the Ingestre coachman, Mr Hancox, for shopping and running errands. Two people can be accommodated on the forward facing seat which can be adjusted to correct the vehicle’s balance.
The Norfolk Cart is one of a whole range of popular vehicles called rustic dog carts. They were light-weight traps built from the 1850s onwards. They were based upon the older, heavier four-wheeled dog carts which were designed to carry both passengers and dogs on shooting expeditions.
